Jillian MaloneyWe welcome Dr. Jillian Maloney as our newest faculty addition to the Department of Geological Sciences. Jillian will begin her appointment this January, 2015, after she finishes a postdoctoral research position at Louisiana State University (LSU), where she is using geophysics to understand sediment slide dynamics on the Mississippi Delta.

Jillian has established a strong record of geophysical research and a focus on earth science education.  She uses geophysical data including seismic reflection,  multibeam bathymetry,  backscatter,  and LiDAR to study fault geometry and earthquake history along the North American-Pacific plate boundary.  Her research focus fits well with ongoing research at SDSU, in particular, pairing of complex offshore fault systems with existing onshore research programs in geophysics, tectonics, and stratigraphy.

Jillian will enhance our strong tradition of mentoring students in the classroom and out in the field.  She received a Scripps GK12 fellowship to bring cutting-edge earth systems science into San Diego middle and high schools.  Jillian brings with her new teaching styles and evaluation strategies that will assist students in building a set of skills enabling them to be successful beyond the classroom.  With her strong academic background, seismic stratigraphy research focus, and teaching experience she will help develop and implement a comprehensive curriculum for the Sedimentology and Stratigraphy course, as well as general education, and upper division courses.

Jillian’s research interests and desire to balance research and education makes her an excellent fit here at SDSU and in the Department of Geological Sciences.
