Congratulations to Shuo Ma on his promotion to Associate Professor with Tenure in the Department of Geological Sciences. Joining our JDP program in 2008 and just seven years since earning his PhD, Shuo has already emerged as a nationally recognized scientist in the highly competitive and socially relevant field of earthquake dynamics. A leader in the field has identified Shou “as one of the most bold, innovative, technically gifted, and broadly interested seismologists of his generation”. His recent well-received Geophysical Research Letters paper proposes a new dynamic rupturing mechanism that explains long-standing mysteries of tsunami generation and deformation processes in shallow subduction zones. We are fortunate to have Shuo here and look forward to his continuing teaching, research and service contributions to the University.
